Real Story: Aspiring to Teach

When Karen* joined Moving On Tyne & Wear (MOTW), her last paid employment had been roughly 10 years ago when she started her own takeaway business, but she has since cared for her son.

Karen always had aspirations of working as a teaching assistant in a paid post, with the hope of potentially becoming a teacher in the future.

Since joining MOTW, Karen has enrolled onto the ‘Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools’ Level 2 course and is now completing coursework, working in groups within college, and undertaking a placement in a local primary school for four days per week.

Karen and her Navigator have enquired about completing first aid training for the workplace and also safeguarding training, to improve Karen’s opportunity to secure paid employment after college. In order for Karen to be able to enrol onto her Level 2 course, she has had to begin to complete her English and Maths qualifications through Test the City Sunderland College. She has recently completed her Maths with 91%, and is now completing English with the support of her Navigator. Karen hopes this will also improve her English skills, which have been raised in appraisals with her placement tutor.

Karen’s Navigator helped her to find the most appropriate route into supporting teaching and education, and has provided Karen with information and support, which¬†Karen still finds invaluable, as she is now balancing college placement, college attendance, English classes, navigator meetings and family life!

Karen now hopes to gain her Level 3 qualification, to tutor her own classes in assisting the teacher. Karen is an extremely hard worker and feels very positive, but wants to ensure she has the right qualifications to for the job she has aspired to and finds so rewarding.
