One step closer to achieving the dream

One of our North Tyneside participants came to Moving On Tyne & Wear with a clear idea as to where they saw themselves working but didn’t know how they could ever achieve their dream.

Our participant suffered from depression which was triggered several years ago when his grandfather passed away.  He later contracted long COVID which severely limited his ability to do normal activities and had a huge negative impact on his mental health. Working with one our Navigators, Joe, our participant discussed his past employment experience and future goals but before he could move forward Joe needed to help him address his barriers first.

Joe signed him up to attend the Mental Health and Wellbeing course ran by the Wellbeing Challenge.  This course helps people understand their wellbeing and mental resistance whilst signposting them to relevant support services in the local area.  Joe also arranged for our participant to have one-to-one financial capability support from a financial advisor within Oasis Community Housing.  This is available to all Moving On Tyne & Wear participants and helps them to understand their finances, tackle any problems and make a realistic plan for the future.

After this help our participant was in a great place, both mentally and financially, and his confidence flourished as a result.  His physical health as a result of long COVID is improving week on week and now that he has a clear path for the future he is enthusiastic, optimistic and excited about what’s to come next.

I can’t thank you enough, you do such a good job, now I feel I know where I’m going and I feel much more confident

When he feels physically ready, we’ll sign him up to obtain the qualifications he needs to become an HGV driver, his dream job!  We’re confident he’s in the right space mentally for this course and the employment opportunities that will follow, and it won’t be long until he’s ready physically now too.  We want to give people the best possible chance of success, and if that means waiting until the time is right rather than rush people then that’s exactly what we’ll do.
