Working with Older People

Moving On Tyne & Wear help those from the Tyne & Wear region who are unemployed and have a health barrier, disability, additional learning need or autism get into employment, training or volunteering.

Our eligibility criteria states that anyone over the age of 18 can benefit from our service, but something we’re really proud of is that we don’t have a cut off age!  So, even if you’re in your 50’s or 60’s and need some support to move closer to the job market, you can join our programme and benefit from our service – all for free.

Our older participants can feel lost when they come on programme, they often struggle to understand how they can move forward and assume their age is a barrier they can’t do anything about. Our team of Navigators don’t see things the same way…

We actually see it as a bonus as our older participants come with transferable knowledge, skills, and experience that can be adjusted to suit most areas of work.

Age makes no difference to the service we offer, as we tailor each individual’s journey depending on their past experience, current needs, and future goals and aspirations.

We find that some of our older participants are worried what kind of job they could get due to their age – perhaps because they haven’t worked for a long time or have a lack of confidence going into interviews against younger candidates.  However, our experience tells us that employers are willing to employ anyone who fits the specifications of the role regardless of age, and we can help create CV’s to address gaps in employment, and practice interview techniques to build confidence.

Other older participants may come to us feeling like they are unable to work due to medical reasons and need help to address their health issues before moving forward with employment related activities.  We can support these participants to attend a mental health & wellbeing course to improve their self-confidence and mindset, and often encourage them to sign up to volunteering opportunities in their local community.  It’s a great way for them to keep busy, get out the house, build a support network of friends and learn something new – preparing them to re-enter the world of work.

We’ve supported 681 participants over the age of 50 since our programme began, and our range of support goes above and beyond finding work or volunteering!  We’ve helped people with their digital skills so they’re less socially isolated and confident in their abilities to use devices.  We’ve supported people with their financial planning so their future can be financially stable and stress free.  And we’ve helped others with their mental health and wellbeing, so they believe they are good enough to go after a job that we know they’re capable of.

So, if you, or someone you know thinks you’re too old to move forward, then think again!!  Join Moving On Tyne & Wear today by:
