VODA, one of MOTW’s charity partners, offers support, advice and training to volunteers and voluntary and community groups operating in North Tyneside.
Volunteering has many advantages for the recipient; however, it is also incredibly valuable and beneficial to the volunteer. We work closely with VODA to promote the benefits of volunteering to our participants, and actively encourage them to consider and think about volunteering as an invaluable way of moving forward.
If you’re struggling with confidence… volunteer!
There is no pressure and no obligation, but the opportunities are there waiting for you when you’re ready. Volunteering allows you to learn new skills and enhance your existing abilities through a range of different opportunities. VODA will suggest opportunities that match your interests or would be beneficial in helping you achieve your end goal – whatever that may be. They can break things down into easier, more manageable chunks allowing you to complete activities at your own pace and focus on the elements you enjoy and are comfortable with. Alternatively, they’ll encourage you to try new things and increase your knowledge… when you’re ready to do so. Whatever you decide to do, and the decision is always yours, you’ll soon see what you’re capable of and your confidence will begin to grow as a result.
If you doubt you could get a job as you don’t have the skills or experience… volunteer!
You can volunteer in many different places and professions, taking on numerous tasks and activities. All of which provide you with the opportunity to learn new skills, many of which will be transferrable and useful for when you’re looking for a job. VODA can help you make sense of this, and understand the types of volunteering you should be doing in order to get to where you want to be. For example, if you’re after a job in retail, you could volunteer at a local charity shop (once restrictions allow) giving you valuable insight into cash handling, stock checks and customer service. But you could also volunteer to be a Digital Champion, which demonstrates your eagerness to help and enhances your people skills.
If you want your CV to stand out from the crowd… volunteer!
Volunteering is a great addition to any CV and not only demonstrates your caring nature, but a dedicated work ethic. When you list your skills, and attribute those to your volunteering, it can help potential employers understand that you’re not only qualified but conscientious. Volunteering presents opportunities to meet new people, and work as part of a team. This is great in helping you make friends and connections within the community, but it also enhances your team working skills which nearly every employer looks for! And last, but certainly not least, volunteering provides a great talking point during an interview! 😊
