Moving On Tyne & Wear

STEM Innovation Project (North Tyneside)

About the STEM Innovation Project

Have you considered a career involving Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and would like to find out about the exciting opportunities available in a fun and interactive way?

Perhaps it’s not something you’ve previously considered, but you’re ready for a change or want to boost your confidence?

If so, the STEM Innovation Project could be for you!

We provide tailored one-to-one support based upon your individual needs. You can get involved in workshops, volunteering and work place visits on our programme.

We will also help you to look at your skills and interests in STEM and broker volunteering opportunities in the community which match your needs. All of our volunteering opportunities are designed to provide opportunities to learn more about STEM subjects, and we can provide taster days in areas such as Shoreside Nature Surveys and in gardening to see how you would like to progress. Whatever your interests are—from model making to photography—there’s an opportunity waiting.

We also have an eight week programme of training workshops aimed at helping you find out about the varied careers that utilise STEM skills. From making lava or bath bombs, to discovering forensics and DNA, astronomy, plant and body x-rays and sound technology—there’s something for everyone!

Who we work with

  • Are you from the North Tyneside area? Or from across Tyne and Wear and willing to travel?
  • Are you aged 25+ and eligible to work in the UK?
  • Are you currently unemployed or economically inactive?
  • Do you have a health issue?

The STEM Innovation Project is open to everybody, but we are particularly interested in hearing from women who might have an interest in exploring this area of training and volunteering.

If this is you, please get in touch. A friendly team member will talk to you about your needs and discuss the support that can be offered.

The support we offer

If you are accepted onto the project, we will provide you with support to:

  • Find STEM related volunteering opportunities that match your interests
  • Attend training in a relaxed environment helping you to learn new skills and discover the STEM sector
  • Develop plans to improve your health and wellbeing
  • Develop skills for the workplace
  • Create a CV, write applications, and develop interview skills

We will also introduce you to employers in the STEM sector.

Who delivers this programme?

These activities are delivered by North Tyneside Council and VODA, the volunteering centre for North Tyneside, in partnership. Both organisations provide one-to-one support, with VODA leading on volunteering options and North Tyneside Council leading on training and employment opportunities.
